  • Athlete’s Edge and their provider are not credentialed with any insurance companies. For most insurance companies, we are considered “out of network” providers, so the cost of services will be out of pocket. Mental Performance Consulting is not covered by insurance. Insurance companies will not view the work together as a necessity, but clients are able to submit their receipts to their insurance companies to inquire about reimbursement. Athlete’s Edge is not responsible nor can guarantee any type of reimbursement from insurance companies.

  • Yes! Clients can be located in any state when receiving services. We offer consulting services both in person in our Brookings office and virtually. Jen offers to travel to meet with clients in the area. Other travel arrangements can be made per request and at the cost of the client.

  • No. Athlete’s Edge is not only for athletes. Our aim is to support anyone through “the psychology of performance,” or the mental aspects performance. The tools learned and used in sessions apply to performing in the classroom, the board room, and the operating room just as they would in sport. We’re learning skills to perform better as a whole person, not only as an athlete.

  • Anyone who wants to improve or do something better. We play different role within our lives and learning how to consistently be the best version of ourselves creates better outcomes for us as a whole. Having an understanding of who we are, how we think and what we do to be at our best helps us not only with performance but builds overall confidence. Other people who would benefit from mental performance consulting include: coaches, organization leaders, first responders, medical professionals, and musicians.

  • During the intake session, Jen will gather a background on the athlete by asking lots of questions. You will discuss your history with sports/athletics and your motivation for seeking mental performance services. This is also where athletes talk about concerns and work collaboratively with Jen to develop goals.

During follow up sessions athletes will review homework and skills practiced outside of sessions, give an update on performance, talk about barriers, and continue learning skills based on their individualized concerns or area of focus.

  • Athlete’s Edge works with athletes ages 16+. This includes athletes that participate in high school, club, juniors, minors, college, and professional sports. Athletes younger than 16 that are interested in receiving services should have a parent complete an application to work with Jen. Jen may ask to speak with or receive letters of reference from coaches to assess if the athlete is appropriate for the services we offer.

  • Athlete’s Edge is not able to provide formal mental health services to athletes. With Jen’s experience in clinical social work, she is able to provide guidance and referrals if an athlete needs further assistance to address mental health conditions outside of performance related concerns. Clients do not receive a formal mental health diagnosis. We focus on topics such as motivation, goal setting, injury recovery, confidence, mental toughness, and other psychological skills. Athletes who present with additional mental health conditions or concerns can work with both a mental performance consultant and a licensed mental health professional as long as there is communication between all parties on clearly defined roles.
